TORMENTS AND SANITY
Torments: A character will begin with two (sometimes more, in certain cases) traits called "torments", which will be chosen by staff based on factors such as the character's history, personality, and even their physical looks. These can range from simple insecurities or generalized health issues to advanced physical or mental trauma, but nonetheless, these are all considered problems a character must work to overcome throughout the course of roleplay. Torments may also be acquired throughout the course of normal roleplay, just as they can be lost.
Overcoming a torment is not an easy feat, nor can it be conquered in a single post or thread; rather, these take time, effort, and persistence to truly vanquish. When a character is on the threshold of dramatic personal changes, they become qualified for an attempt to conquer one of their torments –– this can be achieved through a solo thread of 1,000 words in length, or with the assistance of a staff-guided mission tailored to the character's torment in question. You will be notified by a Game Master when your character is ready for this quest.
Listed below are the different stages of torments a character may be afflicted with.
Level I - A straightforward issue that generally irks or discomforts the character, but not enough to weigh them down on a 24/7 basis.
Level II - A moderately burdensome torment, one that will affect the character's ability to function to some considerable degree. At its most potent, the occasional nightmare or two will occur.
Level III - A severe torment that results in certain trauma for the character, which has a dramatic effect on their ability to function. This torment plagues the character day in and day out.

Sanity: Sanity is your character's current state of mind. This varies greatly from person to person at creation; while most may choose to start off with a mentally healthy character, others may opt to jump into the psyche of someone who is completely damaged. This has no bearing on statistics, but should be taken into consideration when roleplaying as the character. Just as a character can lose sanity throughout the course of roleplay, it too can be healed and mended.
If a character's sanity is allowed to break and twist for too long, they will have a strong chance of being imparted with a negative crest. See the Crests page for more details.
The following are the different levels of character sanity.
Healthy - The character is mentally healthy in nearly every aspect. It is likely that they will grow to become strong-minded if allowed to flourish without hindrance.
Stable - This character is not without their fair share of psychological blemishes, such as the odd compulsion or two, but is otherwise considered normal.
Troubled - This character is deeply affected by their personal demons. Though it may appear to be that they manage, deep down, the weight of their past slowly suffocates them.
Desensitized - This character is mentally numb to the problems that once affected them so severely, whether it be the sight of blood and gore or being faced against more damnable horrors. Torments no longer affect the character negatively at this state.
Broken - This character suffers from a fractured state of thought, having been greatly transformed by whatever event they were forced to endure. They are more prone to emotional fits and even the occasional outburst.
Monster - This character has lost their mind altogether, forever warped into something that no longer represents themselves. It is not unheard of to consider these people inhuman at this stage of sanity, as they often take pride in their torments as a kind of twisted accomplishment.
