The sun cast an orange glow over the Deck, the former oil rig well on its way to completion. While the people were working down below, on one of the highest points, the founder and leader of this para-military group, was having some problems of his own.
"Dammit!" he hissed, slamming his human fist down on the metal with a loud clang. He had been at this for hours! Why wasn't it working!?
"Boss?"
Hyde glanced over his shoulder to see his partner, Sable, standing in the doorway. "What's up?" he asked, trying to keep his voice level. The Pawn Chessmon quietly approached him. "I've been looking for you for hours. What are you doing up here?" Hyde gave a small sigh. "Nothing important. Just, trying to figure this out." He held out his hand and Sable glanced at it. A small purple object, flat with a strange symbol on it. "Is that...a crest?" Sable asked, his tamer nodding. "I found it at one point while exploring. This is one of those things that allows digimon to digivolve beyond the champion level. To reach ultimate." he clenched the crest tightly in his hand in frustration, "If only I can get this damn thing to work! I've been looking at this thing for hours and I'm no closer to figuring it out!"
Sable tilted her head to the side. "And you didn't think to ask me? I mean, if you want me to digivolve, wouldn't it make sense for me to be here?" Hyde paused and gave a rueful chuckle. "I guess you're right. I just...I just wanted to try and get a hang of this on my own, work it out so we didn't have to do anything drastic to make it happen, like some others have in the past." Sable gave a small nod. She could understand that. Hyde had a sense of pride when it came to figuring things out. And as much as she wanted to help him, she wasn't exactly the brains of the group. She had always been the one to support Hyde's crazy schemes. "If only Weiss was here..."
A low growl came from Hyde. "If Weiss were here, I wouldn't even be bothering with this!" he rose to his feet, his fists clenched tightly, "I wouldn't have done all of this! If Weiss were here...!" his voice trailed off as Sable stared at him. "That...that's what this is all about isn't it?" she asked. Hyde spun around to face his partner. "Of course it is! Weiss is gone, and he's never coming back! And I couldn't do anything to stop it! Every day I keep thinking what I could have done. Should I have walked away from that fight? Was there some way to win and prevent his destruction that I just missed!? All of that, and there's nothing I can do about it! All I can do now, is make the son of a bitch responsible pay, and I can't do that unless we're stronger! Don't you feel the same way!? He was your brother!"
There was an overbearing silence between them before Sable replied. "I did feel that way...once...but then I thought to myself one day..." she looked up at him, "What would Weiss say about all of this?" Hyde was visibly taken aback. "What would...Weiss say?" Sable nodded. "He'd probably say to stop and think about it for a moment. I mean, sure, we can spend the rest of our lives working to get revenge on the guy, and we may very well get it. But then what? What comes afterwards?" she held her hands out, "What becomes of all of this? We made this up from nothing Hyde, and if all this is going towards one simple goal...what will happen to all of it afterwards." she lowered her arms, "What will become of everyone we've met, everyone we care about? We've got so much more now! You just need to realize it..."
Hyde was quiet for a moment, trying to process all of this. What Sable had just said...was EXACTLY what Weiss would have said. He had always been the level headed one, the one to think things through while Hyde and Sable were the driving forces. And even though he was gone, Sable was still, in a way, keeping him alive. "It's just..." Hyde spoke, something catching in his throat. It was only then he realized that tears were forming in his eye. Slowly, Sable approached him, hugging him tightly. "I know...we both loved him...and miss him very much. But I'm sure he wouldn't want us being a bunch of idiots while he's gone." Hyde went down on one knee, pulling his partner close. "You're...you're right..." As he held his partner, he looked around. The Deck, the Wild Cards, all the people he had met and grown to care about. Sure, it had been born from a desire for revenge, but did that mean it had to only be tied to that revenge? Maybe...it was time to let it go and just move on, and work with what he had...instead of being stuck in the past. It wasn't like he could change anything about it afterall.
Suddenly, the crest in Hyde's hand began to glow brightly, and a purple glow began to surround Sable. Hyde took a step back as the light began to envelop her, and the small digimon began to swell in size. Growing bigger...and bigger...and bigger. "Holy crap!" Hyde yelled out, realizing they were running out of room. Sable, still growing and shifting, broke into a run, heading for the edge of the platform and diving off of the edge. Hyde's heart froze as he ran to the edge, trying to see what happened to his partner.
Only for a massive form to rise up in her place. It was huge! Almost as big as the Deck itself. Resembling a walking castle, with dark walls and gun placements all over her body. The massive digimon, Rook Chessmon, looked over her new form before slowly looking up at Hyde. Their minds seemed to be working in unison because what they said next came out at the same time.
"Oh fuck the hell yes."
"Dammit!" he hissed, slamming his human fist down on the metal with a loud clang. He had been at this for hours! Why wasn't it working!?
