DIGIMENTAL HUNT
"Stay close."
Admittedly, Claire was nervous about being in the Dark Area again- after all, this was where it happened. One look at Walter reminded her of that day where she saw him violently blown to bits- luckily Digimon apparently didn't have bloody things like intestines and other innards, or else both of them would have been in much worse shape than they were today. No, instead, Walter eventually became whole again- at least physically.
A small sigh escaped her lips, and she pulled her scarf above her mouth and nose for a little protection from the dark air. There were no other tamers around, but would they really be capable of telling if there were? Perhaps through her Digivice, but not visually.
In the distance, a large Digimon's bellowing cry could be heard, and the two instinctively tensed and fell silent, aware of their surroundings. When no charging monster came, they began to move again, with caution- there was a reason Claire took a real, serious weapon into the Digital World.
"Our Digimental should be here somewhere."
The woman paused to look at her partner and felt a pang of sorrow. There were times she had to wonder if he was really the same Walter. Would things ever be the same between them again? All those memories. Years of adventures with her... gone in a flash of shattered data, scattering into the ash.
And she still had no idea why all of him hadn't recovered, so for all she knew, it could happen again. The thought of losing pieces of her best friend again made her feel sick all over again, and she shifted to keep a grip on her sword, ready to attack the creatures that no doubt waited in the dark.
She shook her head in an attempt to focus. The Digimental was close, her D-3 told her so. That kind of item was a valuable asset, worth coming back for, especially in Walter's state- of non-digivolution. Nothing some more training wouldn't fix, but certainly a major disappointment.
But it was also the quest for this very item that lead to Walter's destruction last time.
"Claire, is something bothering you?" The Lopmon asked suddenly, trailing behind her.
She smiled in an attempt to mask her thoughts. "Why would you ask something like that?" Another roar, closer this time. Preemptively, Claire drew her sword, but simply waited, staring out into the ash for a moment. A snarl, a Digimon's attack call. Something was out there, but whatever it was seemed to have it's own problems.
"Because," Walter started, then paused for a moment for continuing. "something's bothering you. You've been... tense, ever since we came here."
She laughed softly, shaking her head. "Why wouldn't I be tense? It's a dangerous place, my friend. There are dragons out here that would devour a little rabbit if given the chance. This is an unwise place for chit chat."
"Please don't brush me off, Claire. I'm here for you... I always have been, even if I don't remember it, I know I have." She paused at this, staring ahead without looking at him. "Ever since I re-hatched, you've... been acting weird. Distant."
She raised an eyebrow and looked Walter in the eye. "Oh, really? What makes you say that?" Knowing of course, he couldn't remember how she was usually like- she couldn't say her words didn't have just the slightest lace of venom behind them, despite herself. But how could he possibly know that she'd suddenly felt sharply disconnected to him now? Perhaps not entirely- he still had the same personality, and of course, he was still her friend, but things were different now...
Weren't they?
"I... I don't know," The Lopmon replied. "I can just feel it. Claire, you know you're everything to me, and even if I don't remember everything, I remember you. I just know this isn't... entirely... normal." Though he had been walking behind her this entire time, he now cleared his throat and trotted up beside her, reaching up to touch her hand.
She didn't withdraw, but felt herself tear up slightly and made an effort to hold them back- most of the time, she personally cared little about what happened in the Digital World. Perhaps, as a tamer, it was her job to protect it by any means necessary, but she rarely got emotional over it. She told herself at the beginning she would never get overly emotional about it... but Walter was special to her.
"I'm not sure if I can convince you to stop holding your tears anymore, but... I just want you to know I'm still me, and I'm still here."
I'm still here.
She frowned slightly, still making an effort to keep a neutral expression. Nothing was said in reply- to her at least, it wasn't as simple as he was trying to make it sound. But maybe, just maybe, she would talk to him about it... just not now.
She gently squeezed his little paw, then turned away, blonde hair flicking behind her. "Let's keep moving- we're closer than ever now." Offering her partner a brief smile, she walked toward what unfortunately was the sound of the roars earlier.
What they found was quite the sight- an Airdramon, wings torn apart and collapsed on the ground, breathing quite heavily indeed. The creature stared up at her with tired eyes and snorted softly- no doubt, it would begin to dissolve soon.
What concerned Claire more was what had caused the damage to the Champion-level Digimon- certainly she could hold her own if necessary, but without Walter in a more powerful state, she wouldn't stand a chance against something that could do so much damage to their fallen friend. With any luck, the foe would have been destroyed, and they were only seeing the aftermath of the winner.
Still, just in case, her sword was kept drawn.
As for the Airdramon...
"Are you in pain?" she asked. It made no reply, just closed its eyes and lay limp. "Hm..."
"Then rest easy." With a swift, hard strike, she drove her blade into the dragon's eye, and apparently that was all it took- it had no energy left to fight, and with a jolt of its body, began to dissolve slowly and peacefully.
Things were clean like that in the Digital World.
But underneath the dissolving body lay a pleasant surprise: a black and blue Digimental. Figures- from Claire's experience, a lot of Digimon were drawn to power. Her guess? The Airdramon had fought for this item and ended up being too hurt to use it.
Hastily, she drew her Digivice and pressed the button to scan and absorb it. The sooner they got out of this area, the better.
The scanner read: "FRIENDSHIP".
A very light smile graced her lips- one that Walter wouldn't see through her scarf. "Come on, let's go home."
