► oh it eats us alive Yes there's a scream inside That we all try to hide We hold on so tight But I don't wanna die |
The Digitama received an emotionless stare.
It was white, with muted pink splotches the colour of the markings Lopmon's fur. Walter was inside, Claire knew, waiting to be reborn as a young, fresh Digimon. Conomon, she remembered, though it had been a while since he'd spent an extended period in his baby forms.
'Not that long ago,' Claire reminded herself, eyes narrowing with displeasure.
The note was removed after reading it, and she placed it on a pocket inside her jacket for future reference. That girl- Rei- she interested Claire. Clearly, she and her Digimon possessed a mastery of dark Digivolution unlike almost anything the blonde had ever seen before. Perhaps she had been quick to judge the two before, by their unimpressive appearance- something more sinister lurked underneath an innocent front, and Claire wanted to find out what that was.
But, that was for another day.
Losing, it never bothered her much personally. There was nothing shameful about losing to powerful opponents- there were many out there, and Miss Rei and her BlackGreymon happened to be one of them. It wasn't Walter's loss itself that bothered her, but two things about his defeat did.
The minor one was his reason for fighting. The whole point of this was that he fight to prove himself to her, was it not? What had he said? "I'll win this. For you, Claire." And he'd sounded so devoted, the blonde wanted to believe him. The curious invitation from Crow himself had been the deciding factor in her sitting out of the matches. She watched Walter from the stands face the dark carnivore- even transforming into Wendigomon, drastically increasing his abilities and power.
But what had he done? Failed- and in the first round, no less. She would be lying if she said she wasn't severely disappointed- for someone who insisted on still being "the same Walter" as before, it seemed that she was correct in her hunch that he'd lost more than just his memories.
And that was what bothered her more, about holding Walter's egg again.
She was almost dreading the moment of hatching. Just how different was he going to be, upon waking? Would he lose even more of his memories? Would he remember his training, even by muscle memory?
... Would he even remember her?
Remembering Walter- the one she lost, before his amnesia- made Claire's heart pang with longing. But then she turned, cold eyes staring straight ahead and feet carrying her toward Crow's balcony seat to to watch the next fight.
Walter was gone, and wouldn't be coming back. She wouldn't get her hopes up this time.
Forcing herself to think of something else, thoughts turned to Crow. A friend of that Ginkakumon Spirit User that attacked one of the Digital World's cities, not long ago at all. Presumably, he was one of the Seven then, or at least associated with them in some way- it hadn't been explicitly stated, and it wasn't polite to assume, especially not of a king.
This turn of events was fascinating, really.
The guards- likely to be expecting her, but perhaps not- were given a nod before she called out, softly in tone, but loud enough so that it would be heard over the murmurs of the audience. "Your highness?" And then a small, graceful bow, a small smile on her lips. The chance to humor the theatrics other others was too good to pass up- besides, if it were her, she'd want others to play along, too.

+ attack - - - | The first round was over - and only one fight required direct intervention. There certainly were some interesting battles, for such weak beings. Reikiko and her Digimon showed promise, though they had only beaten a lone rabbit - one lost without a master. Perhaps her true power was yet to be demonstrated.
The blonde folded his hands together, resting his chin upon them in thought.
Leyton, Reikiko, Blight, Kiyoshi, Andrea, Claire - there were so many subjects he had been keeping his eye on this entire tournament. They had a certain spark in them, a drive that was needed to bring upon his ideal new world. These people would follow him, or they would find their strength truly tested. In time, in time. "What about ze girl and ze boy? They claimed to be part of...that organization." He found his thought interrupted by his partner, her voice hushed and worried, as if she spoke of some forbidden subject. The Angewomon sat beside his elaborate chair in one slightly smaller, laying her legs across the arm of the chair to accommodate for her many wings. "Just idiot children who think they're part of something dead. Ignore it." His voice was just as hushed - dismissive in a way.
The angel would not question further.
Crow leaned forward, watching the arena below. No fight was currently going on, and he was alone with his partner. Only two out of the four chairs were filled - his two companions being busy at this point in time. Perhaps napping, perhaps preparing for their possible fights, he didn't bother asking. It didn't matter. The audience was clearing out of the stadium, the few left softly murmuring about the events they witnessed this day and the day prior. It would be night soon, and after that, a new day. The next round.
A single Skullknightmon stood guard at the entrance to the balcony, half-asleep, at that. Crow was not concerned about security, he was fully confident that any threat that came to him could be dealt with without an issue. His visitor would have no trouble entering the room, and after all, he was expecting her. This tamer would be part of his plan - part of the new world.
After all, she had already agreed to help Plutomon. A friend, in a way.
Her voice was heard from across the room - charming but well-heard, it was certainly a voice fit for an actor in his play. "Ah, Miss Lyon. I expected you sooner - but you came at your own accord. I can respect that." He did not turn around to look at her, instead waving a hand, signaling for her to come closer, "Why don't you take a seat? Daichi isn't using it, anyway." His angelic partner would, however, turn around, leaning over the back of the chair while eyeing up the egg - well, if one was able to see her eyes. "Ugh, is room service not even cooking ze food anymore?" She laughed in a innocent matter, giving relief that she was simply joking. However, this suddenly turned dark, "You don't want to end up like ze last guy who brought under-cooked hors d'oeuvres, do you?" She nodded to the corner - in it laid a corpse, something that had yet to be taken out. "You should really get rid of that thing - and stop trying to scare our guests." Crow commented quickly, causing the angel to shut up again. His authority was clearly known - even to this unstable monster.

Claire said nothing in reply, made no excuse- it wasn't asked for, and therefore not necessary. Walter's egg was carried with her to the seat, and there she got a good look at Crow's partner for the first time, gaze lingering for just a second on her masked face.
Ah, Angewoman. Truly a stunning Digimon, and one of Claire's personal favourites in appearance- all grace and beauty in a powerful ultimate form. If given the choice, such a Digimon would have been one of her top picks as a tamer. Alas, it was not meant to be- she was stuck with a fretful little rabbit instead, the woman mused to herself. Unfortunately for Walter, this time it was only thought as half a joke.
Taking the seat directed by Crow, Claire gave a short chuckle to Hummingbird's dark words. A glance was given to the corpse- how gruesome! And Claire couldn't even say she'd been expecting the sight. It made her pause, her expression unchanged- though her eyes did linger on it before turning back to Hummingbird, replying, "Poor fellow- how dreadful." She gave the egg in her lap a light pat near its top. "You're right, I would rather not. Fortunately, Walter isn't on the menu- although if he were, you might find his meat a little overdone." A dark jest of her own, of course referring to the way Kuro had torched him earlier that day.
Blue eyes focused on Crow, taking him in up close for the first time. He was certainly bigger than she'd imagined. Appearances on screens never seemed to give an accurate measure of one's true appearance, but it was still somewhat surprising to Claire. The man's sense of 'fashion'- if you could call it that- was seemingly a polar opposite to her own: flamboyant and gaudy, where hers were subdued in tones and aesthetically antiquated.
If he were just any man on the street, Claire might have dismissed the him as a joke on first glance.
The audience was clearing out, with just a few lingering souls left. Someone barked an overly loud laugh in the distance, one that echoed a bit over the empty stadium. Digimon and human blood was spilled all over the arena, and absently, Claire grazed her fingers over the ring that had taken her own blood- the one that wouldn't be coming off any time soon.
A question was directed at Crow, although it was possible his Digimon would answer as well. "Have the fights been so far to your liking?" A simple, open-ended question, but she was curious- was there a particular reason this bloodbath was started? Had it strictly been for the amusement of Crow and his companions? A celebration of sorts for their victory?
Or was there something more at work here that ran deeper than that? As usual, Claire was looking for it.

+ attack - - - | "To my liking? I'd say so, as far as Champion-level fights go." He gazed upon the empty battlefield - not nearly bloodstained enough. In fact, the arena had yet to even be damaged itself, something that truly surprised him - in the most disappointing of ways. "But I'd be lying if I said I were not disappointed. None of these combatants have exceeded my expectations. I had hoped, somehow, somebody powerful enough would have joined to at least entertain me in a fight." The angel playfully slumped down, changing her position in the chair to face the arena as well. The three blondes watched a battle non-existent, well, perhaps simply not visible.
"I could slice though each and every one of them - with no problem at all.~" The Angewomon chimed in, almost singing her words, "And this is far from my most powerful form.~" She was plucking at a flower like a child, clearly bored. Conversation never humored her, and she couldn't possibly see what her master saw in this...human, this pathetic human and her furthermore pathetic egg of a partner.
"I'd love to meet an even match - somebody who could give me a run for my money again. I guess I'm rambling - you're wondering why you're here, why I'm doing this, am I not right?" Of course she was, it would only be natural for one to wonder. Human instinct, and all of that.
"I simply wanted to get a read on what sort of people walked the Digital World in this age - what their beliefs were, how they fought, what they fought for...and how powerful they were." His voice trailed on, bored with the subject.
"My brother, my master's other Digimon, he has told us of you - of your group. You agreed to help him!~ Which means ze human agrees to help us." That was the grim reality of it - this was simply a discussion about the terms of her employment.

Ah, so it seemed that Crow's tastes were more toward more powerful opponents? Claire couldn't fault him for that, but as for herself, she'd take what she could get.
As for Hummingbird, she seemed rather bored as well, perhaps with the conversation, or with the battles in general. Maybe both. Eyes drifting to the side, Claire watched her hands for just a moment before looking back out to the arena. A violent creature, this one- not so unusual for a Digimon, but unexpected of her species.
A small nod was Claire's answer, a gesture for him to continue.
"Ah." It was only a short pause before Claire realized what he meant by that- Hummingbird's brother, then, would be none of other than Plutomon.
Well, certainly they weren't identical twins then- obviously, the Digimon siblings had greatly contrasting appearances, with minimal physical resemblances. Claire raised her eyebrows, more in surprise than disbelief. Plutomon had mentioned a sister during their meeting, but Claire had been expecting something more... devilish, in appearance. Though as she thought back to Hummingbird's first words to her, she mentally retracted that judgement.
"Indeed, I did." Plutomon had not indicated explicitly that they would be working with the Seven, but with that confirmation things seemed to fall into place now. And with that, Claire had no issue. "All present at the meeting with Plutomon seem to be on board, though our numbers have grown somewhat since then." Quite rapidly, in fact- Claire hadn't expected such immediate growth.
"It would be a pleasure to assist you," she replied sincerely, turning her head to Crow. If she was going to be completely frank... it sounded like a lot of fun. A new game to play: high risk, high reward, and if nothing else, a new thrill.
Walter wouldn't be pleased, but she couldn't bring herself to care or think twice about him, especially since agreeing to help Plutomon meant it was already done. The rabbit never showed much enthusiasm for her decisions anyway.
